Rindera lanata
When seen in its prime, this spectacular plant causes quite a stir. While we might be used to seeing hairy plants in alpine regions, this one is super hairy or woolly as the species name suggests. It seemed to be a favourite of the insect pollinators too. Turkey is a Botanical hot spot and while looking up Rindera lanata on the internet I wasn't surprised to find that in 2019, another species of Rindera new to science had been discovered.
There are probably about 11,000 wild plant species in Turkey many of which are not only native but endemic too and no doubt many more as yet undiscovered plants to be found.
Rindera lanata will grow in the mountains but this one was seen at lower altitudes - still quite high compared with UK for instance. It is mostly found in Eastern Turkey and Western Iran which are both fairly mountainous regions.
