Plantago maritima ssp serpentina   Sea Plantain

Plantago maritima ssp serpentina whole Plantago maritima ssp serpentina close

Although we in the UK are used to Plantago maritima being most often seen at the seaside, the species has four sub species which can thrive inland. This one, ssp serpentina, is usually found on Serpentine rocks as the name suggests. Other subspecies are: spp borealis (in northern latitudes), ssp juncoides (North and South America) and ssp maritima (Europe and parts of Africa). The common names are Sea Plantain, Seaside Plantain or Goose Tongue and it can be used as a source of food like Crithmum maritimum (Rock Samphire).
