Lythrum junceum   Creeping Loosestrife

Lythrum junceum whole Lythrum junceum close

In some ways, particularly the colour and shape of the flower, this is reminiscent of Lythrum salicaria our familiar Purple Loosestrife from the British Isles. It too grows in wet places of which there are very few to be found in Rhodes in May.

Lythrum junceum is a bird-seed alien in the British Isles and sometimes confused with our rare native Lythrum hyssopifolia (Grass Poly). This explains its other common name: False Grass Poly.
