Iris planifolia
Only about 15 or 20 cm in height, this very small Iris flowers early and disappears during the hot summer months. It is the only Iris flowering in Europe belonging to the Scorpiris sub group which was previously know as the Juno group. At one time the name of the genus was Juno hence the reference in many gardening sites.
The broad, shiny leaves have led to some giving this plant the common name "Wide-leaved Iris" but planifolia actually means flat leaves. In the recent past it has been know as Iris alata. It is found in much of southern Europe such as Sicily, Crete, Sardinia and in northern Africa in Morocco.
