Iris paradoxa
Looking at the close-ups of this particular Iris species, you won't be surprised to find that gardeners are very keen to get hold of it. The flower colours are variable though and the standard (upright petals) can be whitish with distinct darker veins like this one, deep purple, pale blue or even pale yellow while the falling petals can be deep almost black-violet to golden yellow. Irises have been used in herbal medicine since ancient times and sometimes have antiviral and anti bacterial properties. They have even been used to treat cancer.
Iris paradoxa is found in Armenian, Iran, Turkey and southern Russia.
