Tulipa orphanidea
We were lucky enough to find a forested hillside covered in Tulipa orphanidea but access was impossible as the area had been fenced of with tightly strung, very sharp, barbed wire. So the photos here are strays which had made it to the roadside bank.
Tulipa orphanidea has a sub species flava which is yellow and this one is probably ssp orphanidea. It grows in Crete and Greece mainland as well as Turkey and in the British Isles is a popular garden plant. Tulipa orphanidea was named after the Greek botanist Theodoros Georgios Orphanides a professor of Botany in Athens in the late 19th century.
