This plant has a distinctly eastern distribution with the Aegean islands, Cyprus and Turkey having some sites but Israel being the main place to find it. The long standard petal (upright) is thought to have inspired the species name: clypeatum = shield in Latin. This annual plant is also known as Helmet Clover sometimes.
