Sternbergia schubertii A Sternbergia
Notionally a wild flower to be found in the countryside, this was best seen on our trip with Greentours in the grounds of ancient Delphi or in the grounds of the monastery of Hosias Lukas. Looking distinctly like a large Autumn flowering yellow crocus, it provided glorious splashes of bright yellow in a very dry landscape.
Our leaders referred to this plant as Sternbergia sicula which was supposed to be a taxonomic revision of its original name: Sternbergia lutea ssp sicula. However Plantlist 1.1 gives the name as Sternbergia schubertii. The genus Sternbergia was named after the botanist and entomologist Count Kasper Maria von Sternberg whose work in the 18th and 19th century laid the foundations of paleobotany.
