Saxifraga aspera   Rough Saxifrage

Sxaifraga aspera whole Sxaifraga aspera close

There are many species of Saxifrage to be found in alpine regions such as the Pyrenees and separating them can be quite a problem. Not so much in this case though because the species name aspera (Rough) refers to the leaves, the edges of which are bristly and rough in appearance. The flowers have yellow mottled pattern reminiscent of Saxifraga hirculus (Marsh Saxifrage) or the very common Saxifraga stellaris (Starry Saxifrage). It is found in the Pyrenees and the Alps at heights of up to 10,000 feet.
