Saxifraga canaliculata
Broad, reflexed petals on the flowers and furrowed leaves are the main distinguishing features of this Saxifrage species which was first discovered in northern Spain and mistaken at first for another species (Saxifraga willkcommiana then Saxifraga camposii var leptopylla). By the end of the 19th century it was recognised as a distinct species and given its current name canaliculata which means chanelled, referring to the leaves.
We found many cushions of this in exactly the position expected: growing from cracks in limestone rocks although these rocks were in the wall of a barn at the end of a remote valley in the Picos de Europa in northern Spain.
