Pyrola rotundifolia ssp maritima Round-leaved Wintergreen RR DD N
This plant is common in the dune slacks at Southport and at Newborough Warren on Anglesey. There is so much of it at Newborough Warren that I was very surprised to hear from an ex warden that it had not always been found there. When new work was being done at the nearby Newborough Forest, trees were brought in form outside Anglesey - some of them from the Sefton Coast where P rotundifolia ssp maritima is common. It is quite likely that the plant arrived with these trees and established itself easily in the ideal conditions of the dunes at Newborough. There are two sub species of P. rotundifolia: ssp maritima and ssp rotundifolia but both are uncommon and there isn't much difference between the two at first sight.
Pyrola rotundifolia ssp maritima is a plant if the western dune slacks mostly of Wales and northern England. There is a little elsewhere in England but not much. There are very few sites in Scotland or Ireland
