Pulmonaria australis   Narrow-leaved Lungwort

Pulmonaria australis whole Pulmonaria australis close

Unlike our British common lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis) named for the spotty nature of its leaves which in the old days were thought to resemble diseased lungs, this plant has quite narrow leaves with no spots at all. The narrow leaves explain its original systematic name: Pulmonaria angustifolia var australis. where angustifolia means narrow-leaved and australis means southern. P. australis will grow in the hills and mountains at heights of up to 7,000 feet.
