Primula hirsuta   Stinking Primrose

Primula hirsuta whole Primula hirsuta close

Three purple/pink Primula species which are not uncommon in the Alps or the Pyrenees are distinguished by their leaves rather than their flowers. The leaves of this plant which you would expect to be called Hairy Primrose, have short hairs and have a few large blunt teeth towards the tip. Primula hirsuta grows in the Alps and Pyrenees and can be found even at heights of 12,000 feet. Cultivars of this species are available from garden centres and Alpine specialists.
