Primula glutinosa Sticky Primrose
On this botanical tour of the Dolomites one half day was set aside to explore a new place. It looked fairly hopeless at first as the bare rocks and gravel interspersed with snow patches betrayed a late Spring. Soon though we found some grassy patches with these dark purple purple flowers amongst the boulders. Even modern cameras are not good at recording purple/blue hues accurately so the colour should be darker if I remember it correctly. Like Soldanella alpina (Alpine Snowbell) this plant is one of the first to colonise unfrozen ground after winter has passed. It is called Sticky Primrose because of the many glandular hairs and is found on granitic (therefore acidic) rocks in the eastern and central Alps, parts of Austria and Croatia.
