Pittosporum is a genus from the southern hemisphere where it is native in south eastern Asian countries such as Japan, China plus Australia and even Hawaii. Being quite drought tolerant, it is often planted for ornamental purposes in parks and gardens in the Mediterranean. Plants in this genus are sometimes known as Cheesewoods, Japanese Cheesewoods or Japanese Mock-orange and like mock-orange (usually Philadelphus sp.) the flowers are fragrant. This one may have been planted but it was actually growing amongst the stones at the top end of a beach so it is also presumably salt tolerant to some degree.
