This beautiful and quite spectacular poppy is a short lived perennial with branched stems and elongated seed heads like Papaver dubium. members of the poppy family Papaveraceae are famous for being farmed by humans. The most famous of these is Papaver somniferum (Opium Poppy) but other species also contain opiates, even Long-headed Poppy, Papaver dubium can be shown to contain morphine.

Papaver fugax though has no morphine but a higher than usual concentration of Codeine which is closely related chemically to morphine. It also contains Thebaine and other opiate another controlled substance.

In some texts this species has been called Armenian Poppy but since there is a poppy called Papaver armeniacum also known by this name, it is probably best to say it has no accepted English name. Papaver fugax is predominantly found in the Caucasus but also in eastern Turkey, Armenia and Iran plus other nearby countries.
