Orthilia secunda   Serrated Wintergreen

The valley created by the retreating Morteratsch glacier had gradually been repopulated by plants, the oldest part now wooded. This was about one third of the way towards the glacier itself where trees had not yet established themselves and the boulders near the melt water river provided a special habitat in which O. secunda thrives. Also known as Nodding Wintergreen, this plant is found throughout the alpine regions of Europe up to 5,000 feet.
