Ophrys holosericea    Late Spider Orchid

Ophrys holosericea whole Ophrys holosericea close

This orchid caused me much confusion as it is named Ophrys holoserica and Ophrys holosericea in various texts. It turns out to be a controversy but I'm as sure as I can be with this much messed about genus that the correct binomial is now Ophrys holosericea according to various authorities including The World Flora Online.

To add to the confusion it has a quite incredible list of synonyms including Ophrys fuciflora and Ophrys lysiensis both of which I have been shown by experts as though they were separate species.

Ophrys holosericea is found in much of western Europe including southern Britain, France, The Netherlands and Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, the Balkan states, Greece, Hungary, Turkey, Syria, Czechia, Slovakia and Libya.
