Neotinea tridentata ssp conica Three Toothed Orchid
This little orchid, no more than about 20 cm to 30 cm tall, is very similar to Neotinea lactea (Milky Orchid) which I have to admit I thought it was when I first saw it but the species name tridentata" refers to the three little teeth on the hood of each floret easily seen in the LHS photograph. It is found in western Mediterranean countries such as Spain and Italy.
Taxonomy: Although still known as Orchis conica Willd. by many experts such as Delforge, the correct accepted name for this plant according to the major databases such as Plantlist 1.1 is Neotinea tridentata ssp conica (Willd.) R.M.Bateman, Pridgeon & M.W.Chase. To confuse matter Delforge also refers to Orchis tridentata Willd. but which has an eastern Mediterranean distribution but which is a synonym for Neotinea tridentata (Scop) R.M.Bateman, Pridgeon & M.W.Chase according to Plantlist1.1
