Molopospermum peloponnesiacum Striped Hemlock
Glorying in a systematic name which must be practised in order to say it without stuttering, this is actually an unpleasant smelling, native umbellifer of the southern Pyrenees and the southern Alps and as you would expect, from Greece. It can be really tall and we found some examples over two metres in height but is described as "medium" in some catalogues. Some think it attractive enough for it to be used as a garden plant and so it can be obtained from various nurseries and grown in the UK but you'd need a big garden if it grew as well as it does in these mountains.
It is clearly tolerant of alpine conditions and will grow in the hills at heights of up to 6,500 feet in southern Europe. Some say that the leaves are used in the preparation of liqueurs and that the fresh, young green leaves can be used in salads but with a common name like Striped Hemlock I'd stick to lettuce.
