Lomandra hastilis Endemic

Lomandra hastilis whole Lomandra hastilis close

This species is closely related to Grass Trees (Badgingarra National Park, Western Australia, 30th August 2012 sp.) which also have a long flowering spike. But Gras Trees develop a trunk like structure so that the flowers stick up form the top of the "tree". To my surprise it is sometime on sale in Nurseries and garden centres and the flowers are said to attract many insects.

It has a strange discontinuous distribution with a significant population around Geraldton but not extending south to Perth. Then the records show it is found along the south coast with outposts even well beyond Cape Arid.
