I. balfourii is actually a native of the Himalayas and like many such plants it has been brought to Europe to plant in gardens and from there has escaped. Like our our own Himalayan Balsam it has seed pods which burst explosively if you touch them when ripe hence its other name: Balfour's Touch-me-not. The exotic looking flowers have also led to another common name: Poor man's Orchid.
