Gagea serotina   Snowdon Lily

Gagea serontina whole Gagea serontina close

While Gagea serotina (old name Lloydia serotina) is a very rare plant found only on north facing rocks in Snowdonia in the British Isles, on the continent it is a much commoner species. This large patch, growing with purple Primula latifolia and a procumbent Salix possibly Salix herbacea, was not in the usual dark damp facing rocks we are used to seeing in Wales. The plants themselves seemed taller and more vigorous. The characteristic purple brown stripes on the outside of the petals were very obvious on these plants.
