The pendulous, tubular, brownish/purple coloured bells are typical of this species. It prefers stony habitats and can tolerate the cold of high altitude sites such as the snowy sites on this extinct volcanic crater on mount Nemrut.

Fritillaria assyriaca ssp assyriaca is found in Turkey a two sub species, this one ssp assyriaca and ssp melananthera. It also occurs in Iran.
