Fritillaria carica Endemic
At first we found these beautiful little Fritillaries in ones and twos but after a goodish walk looking at various slopes near the melting snow, we found an abundance of flowers including this group which looks good enough to be in an alpine garden somewhere.
There are thought to be two sub species of this plant ssp carica and ssp serpenticola although Plantlist 1.1 reckons that Fritillaria serpenticola is actually a separate species and Fritillaria carica ssp serpenticola a synonym.
At this site on Mount Olympos it was growing on an open hillside near snow fields but will also grow at heights of up to 6,000 feet and in Juniper and Pine forest. The upright yellow flower on the right is Gagea villosa.
