Echium plantagineum   Purple Viper's-bugloss

Echium plantagineum whole

This is a common plant on verges and waste places in many Mediterranean countries and has two exserted stamens protruding from the flower which starts off quite reddish in colour but changes to a purple hue later.

The roots can be used to make a reddish dye and the seeds are a source of essential fatty acids such as gamma-linolenic acid.
