Daviesia decurrens    Prickly Bitter-pea Endemic

Daviesia decurrens whole Daviesia decurrens whole

For some time I wondered what the identity of these strange triangular fruited plants was but they flower quite early in Spring and often I was too late. Eventually we arranged a holiday starting in August and I found some with the typical deep red flowers and curved thorns which are to a greater or lesser extent decurrent down the flower stem depending on the sub species..

The thorns are actually modified petioles (leaf stems) which are triangular and able to photosynthesise. Daviesia decurrens is endemic to south west Australia.
