Calandrinia granulifera Pygmy Purslane Endemic
There are so many spectacular plants in western Australia, many with such large colourful blooms that the smaller species are often forgotten. I was interested in this little plant because while most were photographing the everlastings (pink Schoenia & orange Waitzia species) I was looking down. We U.K. botanists are used to looking for small apparently insignificant taxa and this one I nearly trod on. Most Calandrinia species I had seen up to then were bright red/pink in color and usually had many flowers, so it was a surprise to find that this plant was in the same genus.
Calandrinia granulifera is common down the coastal plain from Shark Bay down to the south coast and east even as far as Esperance. It is found throughout the wheat belt too.
