Calamagrostis stricta Narrow Small-reed RRR DD N
The flowers of Calamagrostis stricta are open at first but soon close to form the tight panicle (RHS) so often illustrated in the guide books to grasses. This guides say it is smaller than the fairly common Calamagrostis epigejos (Wood Small-reed) and suggest a maximum height of 100 cm. These plants were more like 150 cm tall. The leaves are a little narrower in C. stricta than C. epigejos but not much.
Calamagrostis stricta is a nationally rare plant with a few sites in northern England and east Anglia, very scattered in Scotland and a few in northern Ireland.
