Calamagrostis epigejos Wood Small-reed C DD N
This was an unexpected find in woodland when we were primarily seeking different Sorbus species in fruit. At this time of year grasses are not only usually well over but have very little of the original flowering structure left. The left hand photograph of Calamagrostis epigejos though were preserved well enough for a passable dried flower arrangement and certainly looked good enough to photograph. This plant is found scattered in damp woodland, dunes and ditches throughout the British Isles but while it is common in the South and East of England there is much less in Scotland and Wales and only a little in Ireland.
