There are five known species in this Burchardia genus which is a member of the Colchicaceae family. It is an endemic to SW Australia and used to be known as Burchardia umbellata until G. J. Keighery and W. Muir (2005) found that there were distinct morphological differences between this and a plant now known as Burchardia umbellata from the Eastern states. Many floras and other texts still refer to this plant as Burchardia umbellata.

Burchardia congesta is a Lily and grows in huge numbers in both Kings Park and Wireless Hill Park where these were photographed. It stays in flower over quite a length of time from August to October.
