Abies pinsapo var pinsapo Spanish Fir
Abies pinsapo is a very special tree and not just because it is the only Spanish Fir tree.
It was one of the few species to survive the last ice age and is found now in Sierra Grazelema, Sierra Bermeja and here where we found it, in Sierra de Nieves in Andalucia. Abies pinsapo var pinsapo is thought to be about two million years old as a species. The individual trees can live up to 200 years and grow only at elevations of 900m or more. It is the Andalucian national tree such is its importance. Unfortunately Abies pinsapo is also endangered but has been subject to conservation work which here appears to have been successful.
It is also found in Morocco but the varieties are different: Abies pinsapo var tazaotana and Abies pinsapo var maroccana
