Viola calcarata Long-spurred Pansy
Growing in large numbers on the alpine pastures of the Swiss Alps, this is a stunning alpine flower which you wouldn't hesitate to have, with no nurserymen's cultivation messing, in your own garden. It has bluntish sepals which distinguish it from the equally long spurred Viola cornuta (Horned Pansy), also an alpine plant, which has very long, narrow, sharply-pointed sepals.
It is found in the Alps, particularly the Maritime Alps, Apennines and the Jura but there are pockets inn the Swiss Alps where these were photographed. Usually it is found in the mountains from 4,000 to 8,000 feet.
