Turdus pilaris   Fieldfare

Turdus pilaris with birds Turdus pilaris alone

Turdus pilaris (Fieldfare) is an immigrant thrush which is normally associated with open countryside in winter. In this particular winter we endured a very cold period with snow and temperatures measured in our garden of minus 12 Celsius or lower. The Bramley apples which had fallen in dozens from our single tree had deliberately been left on the ground for the birds and they came from the fields in good numbers each day to feast during this very cold weather. It was far too cold to go outside to photograph them and anyway they would have flown away so all these photos are taken through double glazing.

As you can see from the photos the Fieldfares were accompanied by Redwing (Turdus iliacus) and Blackbird (Turdus merula) which meant a lot of strutting and threatening as they marked out apple territories.
