Trifolium physodes Bladder Clover
This clover had fruits (not shown - too early) very similar to Strawberry clover (Trifolium fragiferum) but with the stronger pink flowers and dark, marked foliage, there are significant differences. It is a plant of the eastern Mediterranean having stronghold in southern Greece and Crete, only a few in Turkey and many sites in Israel and further north even as far as the foothills of the southern Caucasus. It is said to be a glycophyte which means it prefers to grow in soils with little sodium content. It could grow, as this one did not far from the coast in the hills, but probably not so near that salt spray could reach - it is the dead opposite of a halophyte.
