Silene gallica   French Catchfly

Silene gallica whole Silene gallica close

In Australia Silene gallica is an alien. It comes from Europe (it is also a rare British native plant) which we call Small-flowered Catchfly. It has established itself rather too well in both Western Australia and Victoria where it is regarded as an environmental weed. This plant is var gallica while the ones (in Britain for instance) with red blotches on the petals are, according to Australian taxonomists, var quinquevulnera. It is fairly common in the coastal region from Perth to Albany and is dotted here an there inland and as north of Kalbarri.
