Sambucus racemosa Red-berried Elder C DD N
Immediately reminding you of a mountain ash, this tree has the same startling red berries which attract the eye. Birds are attracted to these berries and butterflies to the fragrant flowers in Spring but much of the plant is poisonous to humans. Potions made from it have in the past been used as an emetic.
Sambucus racemosa is found dotted about in England and less frequently in Wales but Scotland is its home with many records from the eastern regions. In Ireland it is hardly known.
