Ribes nigrum Black Currant I
This introduced shrub produces flowers early and looks a little like Gooseberry without thorns. The distinguishing feature would of course be the fruit but there is another instant indicator and that is the strong smell of the leaves when crushed.
Although introduced Ribes nigrum is such a popular plant for cultivation in gardens and allotments that it has spread to nearly all parts of the British Isles except the most mountainous parts of northern Scotland. In Ireland it is commonest in the north.
