Rhododendron ferrugineum Alpenrose
Often covering the hillsides in the mountains with deep pink flowers, this iconic mountain shrub always attracts the attention of walkers and botanists even though it is not at all uncommon. The flowers in the Tyrol seemed fuller and more plentiful than those in the Alps or the Pyrenees where it is also often found. Rhodendron ferrugineum also grows in the Apennines and will flourish up to heights of 10,500 feet.
