Ranunculus sardous Hairy Buttercup C DD N?
One of the ways in which Ranunculus bulbosus (Bulbous Buttercup) can be separated from the other two common buttercups R. acris (Meadow Buttercup) and R. repens (Creeping Buttercup), is from the sepals which are folded back down the stem. Ranunculus sardous though Hairy Buttercup is another one which does and the name Hairy Buttercup doesn't always help as it isn't necessarily very hairy at all. This specimen had very few hairs on the stem.
Commonest in the south of England Ranunculus sardous is nevertheless found dotted here and there all over England, southern Scotland and Wales nearest the coast. There is only one record from Ireland and very few from central and northern Scotland.
