Prunus persica   Peach Endemic

Prunus persica whole

Prunus persica although associated with Mediterranean countries in the minds of many British people, is thought to have originated in China. It was first introduced to Persia hence the old original name Malum persicum (Persian Apple) and from there became a Mediterranean favourite. The plant here was either an escape or a survivor of a long since deserted cultivated plot in the middle of the Cretan countryside.

Prunus persica is found throughout the Mediterranean.
