Petrophile macrostachya Endemic

Petrophile macrostachya

Petrophile species are named after the Greek for a rock: petra and philos meaning liking or preferring something. Not all Petrophile species seek rocky habitats but some do.

Petrophile macrostachya grows well in areas dominated by gritty, sandy soils with excellent drainage and poor in nutrients too. The species name means "big spike" after stachys (a spike or ear of wheat or corn) and macro which means big. The flower spike isn't that big though so you can't always go by the name the original authors attributed to a taxon.

It is found from about Mandurah, just south of Perth, up the coastal plain and a little way inland almost to Shark Bay.
