Osmunda regalis   Royal Fern N

Osmunda regails whole Osmunda regails frond

Stace is almost understating the frequency of this fern in the West of Ireland when he says "common". When we travelled round the Ring of Kerry, the southern most fields and ditches all had some clumps of Osmunda regalis in them and in one or two it was the dominant fern. However none showed the superb fertile fronds as did the specimen we found on a WFS meeting in Bolton.

O. regalis is quite common in Walesand western England and Scotland and very common in western and central Ireland. It is much less common in the east of Scotland, England and Ireland.
