Orobanche colorata   Painted Broomrape

Orobanche colorata whole Orobanche colorata close

At first I assumed that this Orobanche was parasitic upon the Alchemilla right next to it but I could find no reference to this as the host plant. Most often Salvia species are suggested as a likely host. Looking at the left hand photo there do appear to be Salvia type leaves without flowers nearby so perhaps it is this plant which is the host not the Alchemilla.

This was not identified by ouir expert tour guide botanist but looking at photographs of the plant in a Russian flora and online this one looks so very much like Orobanche colorata that I'm satisfied with the identification.

Plantlist1.1 gives this name: Orobanche colorata as unresolved as it does for the very similar looking Orobanche anatolica. Elsewhere it has been suggested that these are actually the same species.
