Narcissus rupicola Rock Daffodil
Flowering early in the high hills of the Sierra Guadarrama north of Madrid, this small daffodil can be seen in the hundreds by the roadside as you travel over the mountain passes. The common name: Rock Daffodil acurately describes its favoured habitat in the grassy patches between and even on the actual rocks of these mountains. Narcissus rupicola is most often found in these central mountains of Spain with some supposedly growing in the Spanish Pyrenees and some in eastern Portugal.
The small yellow star-shaped flowers nearby in the left hand photo are an as yet unidentified species of Gagea (Yellow Star-of-Bethlehem).
