Motacilla cinerea   Grey Wagtail

Motacilla cinerea Motacilla cinerea side view

There are some birds I never bother looking for in the garden and this is one of them. It is nearly always seen by water hopping from stone to stone in a fast flowing stream or perhaps by a canal. In the winter though bird behaviours change and this was one of only two occasions I have seen Motacilla cinerea visiting our garden in the Cheshire countryside.

The Grey Wagtail is a member of the Wagtail family, Motacillidae but the yellow stands out and suggests to the birding novice (me) it should really be named Yellow Wagtail. The Yellow Wagtail does exist though and is much yellower overall than this bird which has a grey back and head.
