Melampyrum velebiticum
Open yellow flowers contrasting with distinctive purple bracts are the feature of this annual, semi parasitic plant which we found in quite deep shade hence the graininess of the photos. It grows in woods or shady places occasionally in the Cevenne and the Pyrenees but most commonly in the low Alps at heights of up to 3,300 feet. The name is problematic as it is also known as Melampyrum catalaunicum or Melampyrum nemorosum ssp velebiticum but many sources do seem to use Melampyrum velebiticum.
Velebit is the largest range of mountains in Croatia and is part of the Dinaric Alps on the eastern side of the Adriatic.
