Lotus alpinus   Alpine Bird's-foot-trefoil

Lotus alpinus whole Lotus alpinus close

This low growing alpine looks superfically similar to the familar Lotus corniculatus (Bird's-foot-trefoil) but the ones we saw were distinctly procumbent and spreading horizontally across rocky surfaces. Later in the year flowers can appear with more of an orange or reddish tint.

Lotus alpinus is a plant of mountain regions in Europe particularly the Pyrenees and the Alps and can be found at heights of over 9,000 feet.
