Linum perenne ssp alpinum Alpine Flax
Separating the Flaxes, many of which have sky blue flowers with similar leaves, can be a problem but this one was significantly larger than Linum perenne (Perennial Flax) which we find in the British Isles. Neither did it have the small adpressed leaves of Linum narbonense (Beautiful Flax) which has similar sized flowers. In addition there were nicely laid out botanic gardens many of which still had plants with labels in the middle of this countryside and these gardens were only a few hundred metres from where it was growing wild.
Although Linum perenne ssp alpinum is often known as Alpine Flax confusion can arise with Linum alpinum which is also given this name. It can be found in Spain, Greece, France and Austria as well as here in Andorra.
