Linaria alpina Alpine Toadflax
This procumbent, glaucous plant with slightly succulent leaves will grow as high as 12,000 feet and was flourishing at the Summit of Piz Nair - a mere 10,000 feet above sea level in the Alps. At that height it tended to be fairly flat to the ground but at lower altitudes in Pontresina the flower stalks were significant and stood well clear of the matt of leaves. there tend to be two colour forms which grow together. One has distinct orange ridges and the other is pure purple or has very little of the orange colour. The obvious attractiveness of this plant means it is often found for sale as a rock garden plant but is reputed to to be a short lived perennial.
